Bombardier’s Intercity Trains are Considered by the Travelling Public to Be the Best in the UK

    Market Wire, June, 2009

Bombardier is delighted with the news that its UK trains were found to be the best in nine of the 11 design areas assessed by the UK’s travelling public in a recent study conducted by Passenger Focus, the official rail users watchdog in the UK. The study considered passengers’ views of the internal layout, facilities and design features of current intercity rolling stock, looking specifically at long-distance journeys on nine different types of trains in current UK operation. The research compared the general public’s satisfaction in 11 different design aspects of the vehicles, including seating comfort, toilets and luggage provision.

Across the 11 design areas considered, the train types that received the most favourable approval ratings were the Class 222s, operated at the time by Hull Trains and East Midlands Trains. Bombardier’s Voyager trains, in operation on Arriva CrossCountry services, also scored well, with Bombardier’s DEMUs topping nine of the 11 categories.

Commenting on this achievement Colin S Walton, Chairman Bombardier Transporation UK, said: “We constantly strive to improve the travelling environment of our products, so we are delighted that our trains have been well received by the general public Thanks should go to Passenger Focus for this extremely valuable research that will help us to develop our future generation of products, taking the travelling experience to new levels of comfort and reliablilty.”

Tim Shoveller, Managing Director of East Midlands Trains added: “It’s great news to hear that our Meridian Trains have scored so highly with the travelling public. As a company, we’re constantly investing to make further improvements to our fleet and are currently in the process of a multi million pound depot improvement programme that will help to ensure our Meridians Trains keep their place as one of the UK’s favourites, and also take the extra step to become one of the most reliable fleets on the network.”

  • Governor OKs bills on ammo, toxic baby toys

Governor OKs bills on ammo, toxic baby toys

Oakland Tribune, Oct 15, 2007 by Steve Geissinger

SACRAMENTO — Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation Sunday making California the first state in the nation to ban use of a toxic chemical in baby toys, forging a theme of defying conservative interests as he pushed toward a midnight deadline to deal with more than 950 bills sent to his desk by state lawmakers.

Despite industry opposition, the Republican governor signed Assembly Bill 1108 by Assemblywoman Fiona Ma,

D-San Francisco, prohibiting the use of phthalates to makeplastic flexible.

“When a child puts a phthalate-laden teether in her mouth,” Rachel Gibson of Environment California said, “it’s like sucking on a toxic lollipop.”

Perhaps the biggest news over the weekend came when the governor signed two ammunition-related bills vigorously opposed by the National Rifle Association.

AB1471 by Assemblyman Mike Feuer, D-Los Angeles, will require semiautomatic handguns made and sold in California to include crime- fighting technology that will microstamp each bullet fired. It’s also the first such measure in the nation.

The NRA and other foes argued that the technique is not reliable and could be used to implicate innocent people.

Schwarzenegger said in his signing message that he understands the technology is not perfect but hopes it will provide law enforcement with a new tool to solve violent crimes. The law will take effect in 2010.

The governor also signed AB821 by Assemblyman Pedro Nava, D- Santa Barbara, banning lead ammunition in certain areas of the state where lead bullets are believed to be the source of poisoning of endangered condors. Copper ammunition will be allowed instead.

Audubon California representatives praised the governor’s decision, calling the legislation a creative solution that allows wildlife protection and hunting to coexist.

But Lawrence Keane, of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, said Schwarzenegger “has proven to gun owners and sportsmen that he is just another liberal anti-gun Hollywood actor.”

Even though, as expected, the governor vetoed the most significant gay rights legislation — a marriage bill by Assemblyman Mark Leno, D-San Francisco — he signed eight other measures backed by gay rights advocates. They include implementing joint tax filing by domestic partners and reinforcing anti-discrimination laws for gay youth in schools.

Ultimately, this year’s session paled in comparison with last year, when he teamed with Democrats to produce unprecedented legislation to curb global emissions and get $43 billion in infrastructure bonds approved by voters.

A budget standoff eroded legislative efforts and a bipartisan atmosphere. Left out were health care reform, sentencing and parole reform as a means to ease overcrowding rather than just new construction, assisted suicide, water storage and redistricting reform

  • Michelin Reminds Consumers of Important Tire Safety Tips During National Tire Safety Week

Michelin Reminds Consumers of Important Tire Safety Tips During National Tire Safety Week

    PR Newswire, June 5, 2009

GREENVILLE, S.C., June 5 /PRNewswire/ — As part of the annual Rubber Manufacturers Association’s (RMA) National Tire Safety Week from June 7-13, 2009, Michelin is reminding consumers that proper tire maintenance is critical to the performance and safety of their vehicles. In addition, choosing the right tire with a balance of safety, performance and fuel-efficiency can provide confidence and peace of mind while driving.

The MICHELIN(R) Energy(TM) Saver A/S tire, on-sale this week, is a concrete example of a tire that offers exceptional levels of fuel-efficiency*, without sacrificing other key performances and gives consumers an ideal balance. It is one of the first all-season tires in the industry to combine low levels of rolling resistance with superior levels of wet braking and all-season performance.

The Energy Saver All-Season is now available in four sizes that include popular mainstream and hybrid vehicles. The sizes are: P215/60R16; P195/65R15; P195/60R15 and P185/65R15.

    Tire Safety Tips:

The following tire care tips will help to maintain a safe driving experience:

    Check Tire Pressure

Proper inflation is essential for the performance and longevity of the tire. Under-inflated tires will make your tire wear unevenly and negatively impact performance. In addition, keeping your tire pressure at the recommended level can boost fuel efficiency by one mile per gallon. Before any long trip and once a month, properly check the pressure of each tire with a tire gauge. The car maker’s recommended tire pressure is on the tire placard and can be found near the driver’s door jamb, on the glove compartment door or in the owner’s manual. Do not inflate tires to the maximum pressure molded onto the tire’s sidewall, with the exception of mini-spares.

    Rotate Tires Regularly

Regular rotation helps extend the life of your tires, saving time and money in the long run. For rotation, each tire and wheel is removed from your vehicle and moved to a different position. This ensures that all of the tires wear evenly and last longer. If no period is specified in your vehicle owners manual, tires should be rotated every 6,000 to 8,000 miles. If you have a full-size spare, it should be included in the rotation process.

    Keep Proper Vehicle Alignment

Alignment generally refers to the adjustment of a vehicle’s front and rear suspension parts. Proper alignment helps ensure that your vehicle handles correctly and will help increase the life and performance of your tires.

    Keep Tires Balanced

Balancing compensates for the weight of the tire and wheel assembly after the tire is mounted. A wheel is out of balance when one area is heavier or lighter than the rest. This can cause uneven tread wear and vibration, plus increase the stress on the front-end system, causing them to wear prematurely.

Check Tire Tread Depth and Replace Worn Tires

In most states, the minimum legal tread depth is 2/32 of an inch. If you place a penny with the top of the head facing down into your tires’ shallowest groove and you can see the top of Abraham Lincoln’s head, it’s time to replace your tires.

    About National Tire Safety Week:

National Tire Safety Week is an initiative backed by the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) and its members that aims to educate consumers nationwide about essential tire safety maintenance practices. In its eighth year, the annual event is part of the “Be Tire Smart – Play Your PART” program, a year-round effort designed to help drivers learn the simple steps they can take to ensure that their tires are in good working condition.

    About Michelin:

Dedicated to the improvement of sustainable mobility, Michelin designs, manufactures and sells tires for every type of vehicle, including airplanes, automobiles, bicycles, earthmovers, farm equipment, heavy-duty trucks, motorcycles and the space shuttle. The company also publishes travel guides, hotel and restaurant guides, maps and road atlases

    Making pageant costumes in Nauvoo

Deseret News (Salt Lake City), Jul 27, 2009 by Barbara Renouf

The crown jewel of the summer tourist season in Nauvoo, Ill., is the pageant that depicts the dramatic story of the early LDS Church there.

With music, drama, dance and humor, a cast of nearly 200 tells the story of 1840s Nauvoo and a people who built a thriving city out of what had been swamp land.

Costuming such a period piece is a challenge augmented by the fact that the Nauvoo Pageant will use five different family casts over the course of the summer, bringing the number of people who need costumes to about 750, and the number of costume pieces to more than 10,000.
